English 11 Disclosure Document
Welcome to English 11
Mrs. Jones | Room 611 | [email protected] | ljonesenglish.weebly.com
Overview:
English is one of the most fundamental subjects we teach in school. Literature teaches, guides, and helps us come to appreciate humankind from all cultures and all times. As Carl Sagan explains, “One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.” My goal is to not only help students learn lifetime analytical and communication skills, but to come to understand humanity overall and take part in what I call “The Great Conversation.”
Grading:
All of the 11th grade classes will be using a 4-point scale for all assessments as follows:
4 = high level of proficiency for the assessment objective
3 = basic proficiency for the assessment objective
2 = not yet proficient for the assessment objective
1 = very poor quality and extremely low proficiency for
the assessment objective
I = incomplete according to all assignment requirements
Every day you will earn a total of 4 points for completing the work and staying on task. These are not automatically given just for being a body in a seat. Points will be lost for tardies, sleeping, etc. Throughout the term you will have required assessments. Missing assessments will turn your grade to an Incomplete which will then become an F at the end of the term. THIS MEANS YOU CAN FAIL MY CLASS EVEN IF YOU ARE AT A PASSING PERCENTAGE.
The reason we are approaching grading this way is to encourage students to make mistakes and learn. Too often students stress about every assignment being graded so they aren’t willing to take risks. This will give students daily points just for trying and engaging in the material. Ultimately though, we still need to ensure that students have learned the necessary skills to pass 11th grade English. Thus, assessments are REQUIRED and must be turned in in order to pass the class.
Tardiness
Tardies are a loss of one point. That means your grade for the day will be 75%. Consistent tardies (particularly for first period) mean that your grade for the year could be a C just for tardies. Make an effort to be here on time! Don’t let laziness be a reason to have a bad grade in this class.
Attendance:
Class activities and involvement are imperative to learning: I cannot duplicate the interactions that are critical to English learning for students who are gone. However, this year is going to be a little different. Because of Covid-19, we will have a much looser attendance scoring.
If you are feeling unwell (upset tummy, cough, fever, etc.) PLEASE STAY HOME. YOU WILL BE RISKING THE HEALTH OF EVERYONE. DON’T “SUCK IT UP.”
Your points will be excused for the day you are absent; nevertheless, missed assignments from the days you were gone may be made up for credit – check canvas and the class website for that. Students are personally responsible for getting their missed work and turning it in promptly. Check Canvas and ljonesenglish.weebly.com immediately after you are absent so you don’t have an assignment suddenly due that you did not know about. Your resources (in order) are the website, a classmate, and finally – if no one else can help – me.
Participation:
Students are expected to actively participate in all activities, reading, and discussions. In my class, “no” isn’t an option. If students are shy or struggle to work on-the-spot, they may speak with me privately. An absence does not excuse the student from the responsibility to learn or practice the material. Any student who has missed a class, for whatever reason, will be expected to complete their missed work in a timely manner. Extra credit is available. This is no substitute for the content missed in class, but these assignments will at least exercises the language arts portion of the brain and is the best I can offer. Because these assignments pale in comparison to the actual classwork, there is a limit of 12 points per term.
Late Work:
Since assessments are critical to learning, it is important that all assessments and homework be turned in punctually. Work turned in late will automatically be docked one point (25%). If students need to leave class to pick up their assignments or print them out the day it is due, it will be counted as late. After a week, the max score an assignment can receive is 50%. However, you may turn in your work up until the dead date. If something is assigned, it means I believe it is worth your time.
Hall Passes:
Typically, I prefer to limit the use of hall passes. However, this year you will be allowed to use the hall pass to sanitize, get drinks, etc. I cannot allow more than one student out at a time, so please be courteous. I will send an email home if I worry that this privilege is being abused.
Turning in Assignments:
Assignments with no names will be placed on the “No Name” board and can be retrieved for points. Late work should go in the late work basket by class period. Absent work should be turned into the late basket with “ABSENT” written at the top. If “absent” is not written on the assignment, I will assume it is late. If I cannot read the assignment, I will not grade it: rewrite the assignment if this is the case.
Cellphones:
Cellphones are to be used in class only when directed. Students who don’t have cellphones will have access to other materials to complete any assignment that involves electronic devices. Otherwise, cellphones should be put on silent mode and tucked away into pockets or backpacks. If I see cellphones, I reserve the right to take them until the end of class. Excessive use of cellphones may result in lost points for the day.
Cheating and Plagiarism: This will not be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating, they will receive an automatic zero and further action will take place with the student, administration, and guardian. Students should not use the internet, friends, or family to write their assignments for them. You are plagiarizing if the idea was not originally your own: reading Sparknotes and then writing your own assignments based off of their work is still cheating.
